Clubs from Brazil and Turkey progress to Women's Club Worlds semifinals

 

Fernanda Garay scored 14 points as Brazil's Praia Clube claimed their second victory at the FIVB Volleyball Women's Club World Championship with a win again Kazakhstan's Altay Volleyball Club

Shaoxing, China, December 5, 2018 - Reigning world champions VakifBank Istanbul were joined by Turkish rivals Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul and Brazilian clubs Praia Clube and Minas Tenis Clube in qualifying for the semifinals of the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Women's Club World Championship in Shaoxing after winning their respective matches on Wednesday.

The matches on Wednesday began with a three-set victory for Brazilians Praia Clube against Altay Volleyball Club of Kazakhstan. Victories then went to VakifBank Istanbul against French team Volero Le Cannet and to Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul against Supreme Chonburi of Thailand, both times in three sets. The fourth match of the day saw Minas Tenis Clube of Brazil drop one set to Zhejiang Women's Volleyball Club before claiming victory against the tournament hosts. Today's winners had also won their matches on Tuesday.

When pool play resumes on Friday, VakifBank Istanbul will take on Minas Tenis Clube to decide first place in Pool A and Praia Clube and Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul will play for top spot in Pool B. Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul celebrate winning a point against Pool B opponents Supreme Chonburi on Wednesday.

Wednesday highlights:
• The four clubs claiming victories on the opening day of the competition also won on day two guaranteeing that Turkey's VakifBank Istanbul and Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul and Brazil's Praia Clube and Minas Tenis Clube progress to the semifinals of the competition on Saturday.
• In Pool A, Olympic champion and local favourite Zhu Ting was VakifBank Istanbul's top scorer with 23 points against Volero Le Cannet. Minas Tenis Clube top scorer Gabriela Guimaraes notched 28 points in her team's victory against hosts Zhejiang Women's Volleyball Club.
• In Pool B, Nicole Fawcett scored 19 points to lead Praia Clube to victory against Altay Volleyball Club. Serbian Women's World Championship winner Tijana Boskovic dominated the scoring for Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul with 16 points.
• Zhu leads the tournament scoring after two matchdays with 39 points, three more than Gabi of Minas Tenis Clube and four more than the 35 scored by Eczacibasi VitrA's Boskovic.
• It was the first time any of these clubs were meeting at a Club World Championship
