VakifBank Istanbul open 2018 campaign with match sweep

 

VakifBank Istanbul blocked 16 spikes by Zhejiang Women's Volleyball Club on Day 1 of the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Women's Club World Championship

Shaoxing, China, December 4, 2018 - Reigning champions VakifBank Istanbul capped off the exciting action in the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Women's Club World Championship on Tuesday with a straight-set win over Zhejiang Women's Volleyball Club.

VakifBank were among the three teams that finished with a sweep of their match on Tuesday, together with their Turkish League rivals and two-time Women's Club World Championship winners Eczacibasi Istanbul who won over Altay Volleyball Club and Brazil's Praia Clube who topped Supreme Chonburi. Minas Tenis Clube endured a tough tie-break encounter against Volero Le Cannet.


Gabi Guimaraes of Minas Tenis Clube had some first day jitters as her team were forced by Volero Le Cannet to a tie-break set on the opening day of the FIVB Volleyball Women's Club World Championship.

Tuesday highlights:
• Praia Clube opened the Women’s Club World Championship with a straight-set win over Supreme Chonburi.
• Minas Tenis Clube survived a tough match against Volero Le Cannet, who were led by Cuban scoring machine Heidy Casanova Alvarez.
• FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship MVP Tijana Boskovic and volleyball superstar Kim Yeon Koung teamed-up to lead Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul to a strong start by beating newcomers Altay Volleyball Club.
• Young Turkish player Ebrar Karakurt stepped up for the defending champions to win against the home team - Zhejiang Women's Volleyball Club.
• Top five scorers on opening day were Heidy Casanova Alvarez (25), Carol Gattaz (19), Tijana Boskovic (19), Bruna Honorio Marques (17), Ebrar Karakurt (17).
