Wipawee impresses as Supreme rout Altay in four sets


Supreme Chonburi recorded their first win in the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Women's Club World Championship after beating Altay Volleyball Club on Friday

Shaoxing, China, December 7, 2018 – Young outside hitter Wipawee Srithong delivered an impressive double-digit performance to lead Supreme Chonburi to their first victory in the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship with a 3-1 (25-23, 25-20, 17-25, 25-17) win over Altay Volleyball Club on Friday.

Wipawee recorded 20 spikes and a service ace to lead in scoring, together with her seasoned compatriots Pleumjit Thinkaow and Wilavan Apinyapong, who finished with 18 and 12 points, respectively.

Kazakh nationals Kristina Anikonova and Sana Anarkulova had 15- and 12-point performances for Altay.

Matea Ikic and Kristina Anikonova helped Altay to build an 11-8 lead in the first set, but as Supreme started to pick up the tempo of their game, the Thai club managed to snatch the lead at 15-14. The set came to another deadlock at 23-all, but Supreme gained advantage after a long rally and sealed the set with an ace to win 25-23.

Another tight frame ensued in the second set, but young Thai hitter Wipawee scored well against the Altay blockers. Supreme secured the second set win at 25-20.

Altay captain Sana Anarkulova played a superb third set, leading her team on offence and helping out on defence to build a comfortable cushion at 12-7. The Kazakh club extended their lead and clinched the third set at 25-17. In the fourth set, Pleumjit headed Supreme’s quick offence to outplay Altay until they closed the match with a 25-17 edge.
